FRENCH IMPRESSION 26.01.2012, 18.30 h. Varna City Art Gallery, 1 Lyuben Karavelov Str.

2012-01-17

FRENCH IMPRESSION is a concert and cocktail party from the musical project The Unknown Greats produced by NIRA Communications Agency - a new approach to the European classical heritage through the expressions of jazz and pop culture. The first one named Spanish Passion was performed in October 2010 with great success to the audience at Varna City Art Gallery.

We’re happy to present at the same place, the second part of the program named French Impression including pieces by Claude Debussy, Camille Saint-Saens, Ernest Chausson, Ravel and popular chansons, traditionally performed by Edith Piaf.

This event is supported by The United Bulgarian Bank - a member of NBG Group.

You’ll enjoy various talented performers: the respected Bulgarian mezzo-soprano Boyka Vasileva, one of the most popular club musicians Stoyan Royanov Ya-Ya on the clarinet and the link between two types of music Stratsimir Pavlov - incredible piano player and arranger of the compositions.

You can hear pieces from the program here:

The idea of The Unknown Greats is to meet different types of music - classical, jazz and pop. The aim of the project is to gather in the concert hall two generations of fans - admirers of traditional classical music and young audience.

A better phone-hand-pocket relationship

2012-01-10

Every good design starts with a substantial problem to solve and here is ours:

Smart phones break when dropped and they are dropped easily. Repair and replacement industry consumes huge amounts of energy and resources.

Some guys laugh at people who have dropped and damaged their phones by calling them “butter fingers” but they quickly go silent when the same happens to them. According to major iPhone warranty provider SquareTrade estimated 15.5% of iPhone 4 owners will have a broken glass accident within a year of buying their phone (full report here). This is one in every six people!

About this project

Few weeks ago a guy from our office entered the unfortunate 15.5% above by drowning his iPhone altogether with its protective case. He is a tough fellow, so the problem indeed is not “butter fingers” but the slickness of the phone design. It simply does not offer anything to catch to and it is easily slips off your hand. So, here is our proposal - a folding eyelet for a secure and intuitive one-finger hold. We called it 'Phinglet' (phone-finger-eyelet) and its unique advantage over other accessories is that it effectively prevents drop accidents by simply hooking to your finger. With its development Phinglet’s functionality expanded further to become also a kickstand and a tripod mount. The Phinglet works great with the naked iPhone 4/4S, but it also loves iPhones of all generations, protective cases and anything with a smooth back. If you have a bumper it is compatible with it too and fits in most pouches without a problem. We are especially proud that it is compatible with our other favorite Kickstarter projects which require naked iPhones like the Toast, Glif and Olloclip.

A better phone-hand-pocket relationship.

The Phinglet gets your iPhone ready for action in record time. It just makes for an elegant hold of your iPhone, with no over-grip, accidental touches or tension in your hand. It is easy to intuitively spot it in your pocket, bag or purse and it lets you pull it out quickly and effortlessly.

Like Wyatt Earp but no holster required.

Beyond the fun in holding you iPhone in a fund new way, the Phinglet make it feel very secure in your hand. In fact, it gives you such physical confidence that you will quickly start playing with your iPhone like a Wild West gunslinger would. In no time you will be turning people heads and getting curious sights with positive feedback.

The Case

With its companion accessory we call the Wedge, the Phinglet instantly turns into a variable angle iPhone stand. It works in both portrait and landscape orientation, so you can use your iPhone as anything from a night clock to a mini computer with a wireless keyboard. The Wedge also comes with a standard ¼”-20 camera mount tread, so you can easily attach your iPhone to a tripod and fully utilize its amazing video and time lapse capabilities.

The Tree or Conservatory House near Varna is a place for recreation, relaxed chat with friends and fellow musicians, and contemplation with nature. Local residential building code for rural areas required collateral agricultural use which was in line with the owner's desire for having a large conservatory for growing flowers and hosting small life music events. Steep, picturesque, but compromised site initially used as local sand quarry and illegal waste dump later presented a good design challenge. It pushed us to think about how to restore the original slope and rehabilitate the local ecology. Naturally the waste was cleaned up, the house was fit into the existing quarry pit and the conservatory was put on top of the living spaces for catching maximum sunlight and minimizing footprint. This approach allowed us to use the house as a retaining wall itself and restore the terrain around and even inside it. The typical for every glazed garden heat gains and losses were addressed carefully throughout the design. As a result the conservatory became the main functional, aesthetic and environmental feature of the house. It allows daylight to reach all levels of the house, balances the indoor climate by the thermal mass of its soil, freshens the air with flower aromas and is a favorite place for relaxation. In summer the house benefits from the conservatory's natural cross ventilation, while in the winter the residents enjoy its greenhouse effect. Opaque insulated walls to West and North avoid summer overheating and winter overcooling. Cooling and heating losses in extreme conditions are compensated by a clean exchange with earth via six closed loop geothermal probes connected to a heat pump and radiant floors. The glazed roof collects all rainwater for irrigation and features integrated solar collector for domestic hot water. Living spaces under the conservatory have minimal heat losses due to its insulating effect. Reinforced concrete structure is chosen because of its local popularity and affordability. It is designed with a central core and load-bearing facade frames without internal columns and shear walls. Diagonal, vertical and horizontal structural elements on the Southern and Eastern facades follow the stress lines and reveal the building's tectonics. Organized in this way, the house resembles a tree with a green crown (conservatory), trunk and branches (structure) and roots (geothermal probes) with the residence accommodated in symbiosis within it. Natural landscaping promotes local plant species and preserves local microclimate. Bio-active wastewater treatment unit turns waste into bio- compost and irrigation water. Clean agricultural produce grown on-site adds to the experience of the Conservatory House .
